Pharmaceutical serialization assigns each pack a unique code (usually a DataMatrix) that lets it be tracked across the whole supply chain. It’s a legal requirement to fight falsified medicines, and it only works if the marking is correct and legible. That’s where machine vision becomes essential.
What pharmaceutical serialization is
It consists of printing a unique identifier on each carton (product, serial number, batch and expiry) and registering it in a central repository, such as the European medicines verification system (EMVO). This way, every unit can be authenticated before dispensing.
Marking and machine vision
Marking prints the code; machine vision guarantees that code is correct and legible. Through reading and verification (OCR/OCV and DataMatrix grading), the system checks unit by unit that serialization was applied correctly and rejects any pack with an illegible or wrong code.
Why verification is key
An illegible serialized code is as problematic as not having one: it blocks the unit in the chain. Verifying in-line prevents recalls, distribution rejections and compliance problems. It’s the basis of reliable traceability (see data traceability).
Integration with the line
Serialization verification integrates with the printer/marker and the reject system, and feeds the traceability software. It’s part of comprehensive pharmaceutical quality control.
