Choosing the right machine vision inspection system is the difference between reliable inspection and a source of false rejects. It’s not about buying “the best camera”, but about getting the whole set right for your process. This guide sums up the key criteria.
1. Define which defect you want to detect
It all starts here: what is a correct product and what is a defect? The clearer the quality criterion, the better the solution. Camera, optics and lighting all depend on this (see types of cameras).
2. Consider line speed

3. Rules or deep learning
For well-defined defects, rule-based vision is fast and precise. For natural variability or fuzzy defects, deep learning adds robustness. Many lines combine both.
4. Integration with your line
The system must connect to your control (PLC), the reject system and your traceability. Assess ease of integration as much as the inspection itself.
5. Support and evolution
The product changes; so do regulations. Choose a system (and a partner) you can adjust when needed, preferably with custom software.
